CLUB HISTORY

In the late 1970s, a group of people in and around South Perth decided to form a Bridge Club.

Aided by the South Perth City Council, accommodation was found in the Ernest Johnson Football Pavilion.

With the assistance of the City Council, two public meetings were held, with many people showing interest in the formation of a Bridge Club in the local area.

The South Perth Bridge Club held its first meeting in March 1981, and by the end of the year, membership had grown to over 100.

Having to share the Football Pavilion with a playgroup and the Football Club had its disadvantages, so it was decided that it was time for the Club to obtain its very own premises.

The South Perth City Council was approached and a block of land located on the corner of Barker Avenue and Thelma Street was provided. The Club Committee was charged with the task of matching the monetary assistance granted by the City Council. This goal was achieved through the numerous 'bring & buys', raffles promised debentures, a sizable bank loan and the enthusiastic work and support of the Members.

The Club Building was opened on the 15 March 1985.

Now the South Perth Bridge Club has 395 members of which 9 are life members. The primary bidding system used by Club members is ACOL. However STANDARD AMERICAN and PRECISION are used by a reasonable percentage of Members.

Bridge sessions are conducted daily and on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

Visitors, particularly those from overseas or out of State, are most welcome to enjoy the comfortable licensed facilities and the friendly atmosphere of the Club
